Story: An October wild camp in Snowdonia

This October, the Tanwa team is heading into Snowdonia, North Wales, for a wild camp beside a mountain tarn. The spot? That’s our secret for now. As backpacking specialists, we choose our kit for real nights out in UK conditions.

We’re tailoring this pack to the route and forecast: shelter for an exposed pitch, insulation from cold ground, and dry layers for camp. Every item earns its place. Now it’s your turn: look at the setup and guess what we’ll carry into the mountains.

The backpack and kit

Your challenge is to estimate the combined weight of the backpack and every item shown in the final competition photo, in grams.

Our competition kit, backpack included. Little hint: spot the brands and models, then look up their listed weights online to fine-tune your guess.

How to enter

  1. Make your guess: Study the kit photo and estimate the total weight in grams, backpack included. Looking up the brands and models online can help.
  2. Share your entry: Post our kit photo with your weight guess on Instagram (post or Story). Follow and tag @tanwa_outdoor and @mountainspring2004 so we can record it. One entry per person.
  3. Subscribe using the email signup at the bottom of this page. Existing Tanwa Outdoor subscribers qualify too.
  4. Results will be announced on 22 March 2027 on the Tanwa Outdoor and Mountain Spring Instagram accounts, subject to eligibility checks.

Full competition rules and Eligibility⌄

Who can enter: UK residents aged 18 or over who attend OutdoorXpo 2027 at the NEC Birmingham on 20 or 21 March. A valid ticket in the entrant's name is required, including for entries submitted online beforehand. Expo admission and travel are not included. There is no separate competition entry fee.

Your entry: One whole-gram guess per person, shared in an Instagram post or Story featuring the complete setup photo. Include the guess in the caption or on the Story and tag both @tanwa_outdoor and @mountainspring2004. You must follow both Instagram accounts by the closing date and still be following them when winner eligibility is checked. Your entry must be visible to both accounts so it can be received and recorded. Your first valid entry counts; duplicate posts do not give extra chances. Entries close on 21 March 2027.

Subscription condition: You must be subscribed to Tanwa Outdoor's email newsletter by the closing date, using the email signup at the bottom of this page. Existing subscribers qualify. Shortlisted winners will be asked privately for their subscriber email so we can check this condition.

Competition setup: Guesses must refer to the final published kit photo. The same complete setup will be used for the recorded competition weight and displayed at the expo.

The result: Guesses will be compared against the recorded weight of the complete pack in grams. The smallest absolute difference from that weight ranks highest, whether the guess is above or below it. Ties affecting allocation are resolved by a random draw. Prizes go to seven different eligible entrants, in the order shown above; there is no cash alternative.

Winner checks: Results will be announced on 22 March 2027 and shortlisted winners contacted by Instagram DM from @tanwa_outdoor. A prize is confirmed only after we verify that they follow both Instagram accounts, their newsletter subscription and their valid OutdoorXpo ticket in their own name. Winners must respond within seven days of our message. If eligibility cannot be verified or the winner does not respond, the prize passes to the next closest eligible entrant.

Your information: Instagram entry details, subscriber email and ticket details will be used to administer the competition and verify winners.
