How this overall score is calculated

Our scores reflect the product’s strengths and trade-offs for its intended use. We combine the category ratings, giving more weight to what matters most, into an overall score out of five.

FLEXTAIL R05 sleeping pad inside a tent

The FLEXTAIL Sleeping Pad R05 Regular measures 196 × 65 × 7 cm, with enough width to settle onto your side without your shoulders hanging off the edge. At £120, we’d put it on the shortlist if you want more sleeping room than a narrow mat gives you.

Does the extra width make a difference?

The width is the first thing that makes the R05 appealing. There’s space to turn over rather than having to stay neatly in the middle, and the length accommodates a sleeper just over six feet tall. If keeping your shoulders on a narrow mat is a familiar frustration, those extra centimetres matter.

It’s a comfortable, substantial sleeping surface, without being especially noisy. Not silent, but not the sort of mat where every small movement comes with an intrusive rustle. For us, that combination of room and comfort is a better reason to choose it than the “Tiny” name.

How warm is it?

The R05 has a stated R-value of 5.6. Put simply, that describes how well the mat resists heat escaping into the ground; it isn’t a temperature rating for your whole sleeping setup.

Warmth is part of the appeal, but we wouldn’t choose a winter sleep system on that number alone. Pair it with a suitable sleeping bag or quilt, and allow for the conditions and whether you tend to sleep cold.

Inflation and overnight reliability

The dual-layer valve handles inflation, firmness adjustment and deflation. A compatible FLEXTAIL pump is an option if you prefer not to inflate the mat by mouth; check the package contents when ordering rather than assuming one is included.

The closure stays secure against a light accidental knock. That’s a useful detail on a roomy mat where your feet can end up near the valve. As with any inflatable, clear sharp debris from underneath it before settling down.

The small frustration: packing it away

Packing away is the fiddly bit. The R05 fits into a small bundle, but its bag leaves little room for a loose roll. Take the time to squeeze the air out and fold it neatly before rolling. A slightly bigger bag would make this job easier, especially when you just want to get moving in the morning.

Who should choose the R05?

We’d shortlist the R05 for campers who find standard-width mats cramped and want more room to sleep comfortably. The generous width and relatively quiet surface are its strongest points. The storage bag is less accommodating than the mat itself, but that’s a small frustration beside the benefit of having space to turn over.
